About The University of Turin
The Onco-Haematology department of University of Turin (UNITO), Italy, led by Dr Antonio Palumbo, belongs to the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) and has participated in the development of international guidelines on diagnosis and treatment of this disease typical of elderly people (over 65 years of age). In the last 40 years the main effort of the institution has contributed to the worldwide improvement of treatment of this disease.
In addition, UNITO has developed several important projects in the field of haematological malignancies and in particular in the management of MM therapies with novel agents (the addition of thalidomide, lenalidomide or bortezomib to standard therapy) and in performing autologous transplantation in patients with MM.
Other projects funded by different organizations are Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF2010), the Italian Health Ministry (2008), the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (PRIN 2009-2010), Ricerca Sanitaria Finalizzata Regione Piemonte (878/2006, 1264/2006, 2689/2008, 3599/2008, 2/2009), as well as collaborative grants with industry partners (Janssen, Celgene, Amgen, Merck).
